Who
Won The Civil-War Anyway?

The latest made for "conservative
talk radio" and made for
"conservative-talk television"
political controversy is happening
120 miles south of the
Nation's Capital in Richmond, Virginia.
The dispute involves
the placement of a statue of President
Lincoln and his son
Tad, commemorating the 1865 visit of
the two "Yankee Invaders"
to the capital of the Confederacy
days after it fell.
The offending statue
of the assassinated President is to be
placed at Tredegar Iron
Works, { under the jurisdiction of the
National Park Service
} a foundry that during the Civil War
period produced battlefield
cannon for the Confederate Army.
Apparently, members of
such organizations as the "Sons of
Confederate Veterans"
believe it is an affront to have a statue
of an American President
in their grand old Capitol city. In
fact, Virginia state
delegate Richard H. Black has been quoted
in many sources as stating
that, "putting a statue there is...
like
putting the Confederate flag at the Lincoln Memorial."
Again the number of
Southerner's who love and adore the
defeated Confederacy
is as disappointing as it is disturbing.
What is it about such
men as Jefferson Davis, Robert E. Lee,
and others of their
mutinous ilk, that is so wonderful to white
Southerners of a certain
political affiliation.
The United States of
America is a remarkable country. Whether
it is the greatest on
Earth, or merely the richest and most militarily
significant, is debateable.
-- But the aim of the Confederacy was
to sever the political
union between the North and the South,
so that rich Southern
landowners - and the not so rich -could
continue their brutal
and inhuman exploitation of African slaves.
And thus, had the
South won, the United States as we know
it today, would not
exist.
The Civil War was about
slavery...and to a lesser extent, "states
rights." But slavery
was the machine that powered the conflict.
The central area of
discord. The war would never have happened
had the controversy
been only about the power of an intruding
and ever expanding Federal
bureacracy.
God Bless Abraham Lincoln
and the brave soldiers who died
so that the barbarism
in the South could be ended, and the United
States was able to once
again stand amonst the civilized nations
of the world. One extra
day of slavery would have been one day
too many for those suffering
African and American-born slaves,
who suffered under the
lash, and had their culture, and in too
many instances their
self-respect stripped from them until they
indeed became submissive
and docile.
Why is it that these
Conservative politicians never recall such images
in their self-serving
speeches that glorify the Southerners under
Lee's command. Why is
it that the African-Americans of today
are so often shortchanged
in their political contribution as to what
is culturally appropriate
for the modern South. Why are their opinions
about the Confederate
Flag discounted and maligned? Aren't they
full citizens of Georgia,
and Mississippi, Alabama, Virginia, and the
Carolina's. Is not their
burden important? The obligation they feel
to their
ancestors? These blacks stand, serve, and die, not only
as citizens of the South,
but of the entire United States of America.
Not of some shadow
Confederate government that must forever
be placated and
respected.
Sometimes when listening
to Conservative Southerner's on issues
regarding the legitimacy
of the Confederacy, one can only wonder
who won the War. The
allegiance to old ideas about class and
race that are so often
spoken of. The contempt for Northerner's
and Liberals. --
All fellow Americans mind you.
Today the Stars and Stripes
flies triumphantly over every capitol
in the South. That is
how it should be. And how it should always
be. There is only one
America. One United States. This persistent
mythology that the Confederacy
was some noble misunderstood
thing -- must be resisted
at all cost.
The Confederacy wanted
to destroy the Union and to continue
the exploitation of
their plantation slave population. That is the
message all Americans
must take from that long ago war. And it
is the only message
of any importance to be found there.
