The
True Face Of China
{
Unnecessary SARS Deaths
Because Of The Chinese Government }

The disease starts no
differently than any other common virus.
The victim usually feels
a fever coming on. -- The first true symptom.
His or her temperature
races to 100.4 F. The fever is likely to be
accompanied by general
body aches and pains.
In the following days
the patient may develop an uncomfortable
dry, hacking cough.
Simultaneously, a patient may also begin to
develop more serious
respiratory difficulties. So severe that the
patient may need mechanical
assistance in breathing.
The patient may remain
bed-ridden and incapicitated for a week
or more. Most victims
recover. A slow tiresome process dealing
with fatigue and shortness
of breath during everyday normal
physical activity. Unfortunately,
in perhaps five to ten percent
of the cases, the patient
never even
begins the recovery process,
loses the battle against
the virus, and succumbs.
These are the traits
of SARS. Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome.
A very serious and too-often
fatal disease suspected of being
the result of an infection
by a coronavirus. A family of viruses
that are the cause of
the common cold.
No one knows exactly
how or why SARS has become the deadly
microbe that it is.
Whether it is a "new" or unkown virus that has
made the cross-species
leap from lesser animals such as ducks,
chickens, or pigs. And
up the evolutionary tree to humans. Or
whether it is a mutated
pre-existing virus. Or a combination of
the two possible origins.
An
unknown coronavirus that mutated
to a deadly form
as it made that cross-species leap.
But it is an accepted
fact that SARS originated in south China
late last year, { possibly
November } in the area of Shanglang.
A small village in Guangdong,
Province. Predictably, as this
deadly new disease did
its damage in Guangdong, the local
goverments refused to
admit that there was a new serious health
threat to public. The
number of actual cases were thus, badly
under-reported.
Apparently, China's governmental-hierarchy
cared only that SARS
presented a threat -
not to public health - but to the tourist season
that arrives May 1st.
-- And to China's international reputation.
Please explain
that one!
In other words, counting
tourist dollars was more important than
admitting the existence
of a deadly new contagion. A disease that
had the potential to
spread rapidly outside of China. And was in
fact doing so.
It was only after SARS became an international crisis
did officials in China
admit to the WHO the true magnitude of the
problem in Guandong,
and other areas of southern China. { including
Hong, Kong } And began
reporting more accurate figures.
This is outrageous! SARS
kills people. There is no specific treatment
available for this disease.
And a vaccine is perhaps months, if not
years away. { by which
time the crisis might be over and thousands
dead }
Totalitarian governments
live in fear of their own populace. And
do not tolerate "meddling"
from outsiders. China's well-known
cultural xenophobia
only adds to that negative dimension. That is
why any unforseen and
unpredictable circumstance { such as a
public health crisis
} must be quickly controlled. And access to
internal information
by organizations outside of governmental
control, { such as international
health organizations } must remain
as restricted as possible.
The old men in Beijing
obviously don't care how many people may
yet die of SARS - inside
and outside of China - while they go through
their foot-dragging
routine, in an effort to maintain absolute control.
And protect the
prestige of the Chinese mainland.
As if the emergence of
a deadly disease in China is nothing more
than an Act of God.
-- Or whatever they believe in. And is in fact.
No one's fault.
Unimagined crises such
as the one that SARS presents, only serves
to demonstrate the stark
contrast between the sweetness of liberty
and freedom. Such
as exists in the United States. And the darkness
of totalitarianism.
Such
as exists in China.
The government of the
United States does not fear its own people.
So there is no panic
here amongst the governmental bureacracy,
when unforseen events
emerge. The government serves the public
willingly.
Not the other way around.
There is no need for
"hiding"
flu
epidemics, seasonal floods, crop
failures, or gas explosions
in dilapidated apartment buildings. As if
they were all state
secrets. Or as if to admit that they actually occurred
would somehow create
a national crisis and a resultant loss of
governmental authority
and control.
No matter how Jiang Zemin
and his other Communist Party comrades
are determined to dress
up Red China in another color.
And pretend
that the country is
not
the brutally repressive regime, that the world
knows it to be. -- All
in the cynical interest of acquiring billions of dollars
in international investment.
China's ugly totalitarian
roots remain what they are. The communist
hoard at highest rungs
of the goverment, remain heartless and cruel.
Interested in perpetuating
fiction, rather than truth.
China arrogantly demands
that it be accepted into the international
community of responsible
nations. But judging by China's indifferent
response to a genuine
international health crisis, those words ring
hollow.
Just ask the grieving
families of the unfortunates around the world
who have needlessly
succumbed to SARS. Lives lost so that the paranoid
old men in Beijing,
can sleep comfortably at night.
