 Pie In The Face For The Talking Heads!
 { The Vindication Of Richard Ricci }

 If you are lucky, none of the talking heads on television will ever 
 stand in judgement of your person during a jury trail. These frequent
 talk show guests are often self-serving narcissists who only care
 about proving to the public how astute they are. Well, some of 
 them are wearing a thick layer of pie filling on their faces today. 

 Elizabeth Smart has been found alive!

 That is good news in and of itself. Although there is much information
 about her abduction and nine months of captivity, that has yet to 
 be released to the general public. In time the blanks will be filled
 in. -- But the real story right now is how easily overlooked is the
 fact that a man was all but tried and convicted in the media. 

 His name is Richard Ricci. He died in prison last year of a brain 
 embolism. 

 Lucky man.

 Sarcasm aside, Richard Ricci was crucified nightly on cable news
 shows for months after Elizibeth's Smart's abduction. Self-righteous
 former prosecutors and criminal profilers appeared on programs 
 such as "Larry King Live" and "Hannity and Colmes," to pronounce 
 how it was obvious that the late Mr. Ricci -- "a low-life"-- without 
 a firm alibi was the most likely individual who crept into Elizabeth's 
 upstairs bedroom, and abducted the young teen, while her terrified 
 sister lay silent in her own nearby bed.

 Had Ricci lived and Elizabeth not been found, this man would have 
 had an awfully difficult chance of obtaining a fair trail. -- Anywhere.
 In fact, what with the hysteria fueled by the media as to child molesters. 
 Along with the recent spate of child abductions - particularly in the 
 western half of the United States - Ricci would probably have been 
 convicted on circumstantial evidence alone and sentenced to God 
 only knows how many years in prison.

 { statistical evidence points to the fact that crimes against children
 and young adults has not shown a marked increase in recent years,
 but that the over-reporting and highlighting of certain individual
 cases by the media, leads to a false impression that children today 
 are much less safer than in years, past.. }

 This is another demonstration of the deleterious effect on the national
 consciouness, when news programs serve a secondary function as purely
 "entertainment television." With all those cable programs that have 
 many, many, empty hours to fill, ceaseless speculation about crimes 
 { usually involving wealthy individuals from priviledged backgrounds } 
 and sensationalism, is the catalyst for good ratings. How unfortunate 
 it is that this time we almost had another Richard Jewel situation 
 on our hands.

 Ricci's wife - who stood by her man - can breathe a sigh of relief. 
 And with a knowing smile, accept the hollow affirmations of good 
 will towards her from some of the same pernicious talking heads 
 who all but convicted her late husband { before he had been formally 
 charged with any crime } and referred to his person repeatedly on
 national television in some of the lowest terms applicable to a 
 human being.

 Alas this one ended on a good note. A young teenager missing for
 nine months has been returned safely to her family. -- Apparently in
 good spirits and good health. And in turn, the nation has learned a 
 valuable lesson. 

 An individual can appear - by all manner of reason - to be guilty. 

 And yet be quite innocent.
