Where
Are The Muslim Voices of Reason?

The scaly-fingered reach
of Fundametalist Islam has stretched
to the island of Bali
in the Indonesian archipelago. Powerful
bombs rocked an entertainment
district this weekend, and many,
many lives were lost.
No one has officially
claimed responsibility yet for this terrorist
bombing. But can there
be any doubt that this is the work of Islamic
fundamentalists? Terrorists
whose goal is to destabalize the
psuedo-democratic government
of Indonesia, and to establish
a radical fundamentalist
Islamic state in the region.
Bali is a majority Hindu
area. A relatively small prosperous
community of non-believers
amidst the worlds largest Muslim
populated country. The
Hindu's certainly didn't bomb themselves.
This was the work of
evil brigands who wanted to destroy the
Bali economy, and darken
the islands reputation as destination
of choice for recreation-seeking
Westerners. Ironically, Bali
is a favorite vacation
locale for Australians, Asians not native
to Indonesian, and Europeans.
Not Americans.
The final number on this
tragedy will probably total more than
200 dead. Maybe many
more than that, as there are still scores
of people, unaccounted
for. This lastest example of terrorism
in the name of God,
is one of the most cruelest imaginable. It
was a barbaric act.
Inhumane and uncivilized. Two hundred
innocents gone. Most
of them were young people only seeking
an evening of fun and
entertainment. No different than what
young people have done
since the beginning of modern civilization.
To seek out each other's
company, and to have a good time.
But for these Muslim
fanatics, all that is not permissible under
"Sharia," or
Islamic law, is evil and must be eliminated. This is the
extreme variety of
Islam that these Muslim radicals seek to impose.
What is ironic in all
of this, is that it is the younger generation,
-- college students,
and those just starting a career -- in many
nations across the world,
who are more accepting, or at least
willing to listen to
and recognize these voices calling for Sharia,
than are the older generations.
Not that these young students
want anything to do
with Sharia themselves. But in their youthful
naivete they have more
of a willingness to listen, and to try to
understand.
And it was these people
the terrorists attacted. Wiped off the
face of this earth.
This demonstrates the cruelty of these monsters.
Their inhuman qualities.
Blind to any existence, except what they
seek through their own
distorted faith.
And now, where are the
voices that speak for the Muslim majority?
What about the leadership
in Egypt and Jordan? Or in Kuwait or
the United Arab Emirates?
Or even within Indonesia itself, where
the government seems
to be in denial about the Muslim fanastics
that are now demonstrated
to be in place, in that vast disconnected
country. Where are the
voices that should now be crying out in
indignant rage,
that this mad bombing of innocents does not represent
true Islam?
Is the silence anything
other than what we have come to expect in
the West. There will
be the same excuses. So-called Muslim leaders -
those
willing to be placed on the public record at all - will
call for
more evidence. For more
proof that this evil is really the work of this
terrorist group, or
of that terrorist group. And in the meantime the
Fundamentalists and
Al Queda will only be more emboldened. For
they know already that
the silence is rooted in fear. The moderate
Islamists had dare not
speak out against Al Queda and its allies.
Lest the dangerous implements
of Al Queda be utilized against them.
Islam is one of the worlds
great religions. It is a successful religion,
and a religion that
is growing in numbers, even within the United States
of America. How long
then, will the silent majority of Muslims that
desire to see their
beloved Islam evolve into a truly modern religion,
totally relevant to
the world as it exists today, stand for this insanity?
How long will this silent
horde allow the Osami Bin Laden's, and
Al Queda to blacken
Islam's name? And to destroy the sense of
respect that many followers
of other religions, have genuinely held
for this ancient faith.
A respect that is already
at its limit.
