Maybach. Remember
the name. This is the new ultra-luxury model
from DaimlerChrysler
that all of the world's rich will soon clamor
for in order to separate
themselves from all the just ordinarily wealthy
folks.
The base price starts
at $300,000 dollars which puts the Maybach
upmarket of even Rolls-Royce
and some of the more exotic sports
cars. Production will
be limited to approximately 4,000 automobiles
per year. In order to
guarantee that all important exclusivity.
A $300,000 dollar
base price. This is territory where only oil-shieks,
NBA all-stars, successful
Dot.Com presidents, the top-echelon movie
Hollywood celebrities,
and some of the wealthiest names { old money }
in the world can prowl.
The Maybach is not new.
The original Maybach line was produced
from 1921 to 1941, and
was named after Wilhelm Maybach, a prominent
Daimler-Benz designer
from those golden years before the second
World War. The cars
were high-tech for that era, and fabulously
luxurious automobiles.
But unlike, Rolls-Royce, Bentley, Duesenberg,
or Packard, the Maybach
name never gained an identification with
the excessive wealth
of the first half of the last century. Hence Maybach
is not a name anyone
would readily associate with a prestige automobile.
Daimler-Benz hopes that
will change. That the Maybach will signify
that not only can Daimler-Chrysler
manufacture the state-of-the-art
and highly regarded
Mercedes-Benz line of automobiles, but that the
company can steal customers
away from Rolls-Royce and Bentley.
Ultra-expensive cars
coveted, not because they are necessarily better
automobiles, but because
they are finest, { in the sense of luxury }
vehicles in a price
range that is out of reach of most of the middle-class.
No fancy finance
plan will ever get you into a brand new Rolls-Royce
or Bentley. If
you can't afford one. You truly can't afford one.
There is another component
here. The Maybach also signifies a
technologically resurgent
and confident Germany. America and
Japan stole the glory
-- and the press -- of the internet boom years.
But once again, Germany
will prove to the world that they alone
build the finest motor
cars anywhere. Now that Cadillac, Lincoln,
Infiniti, and Lexus,
have all but closed the performance and quality
gap with the better
German automobiles, { Mercedes, BMW, Audi }
the Maybach will set
a new standard.
The Maybach will not
only be a luxury automobile matched by no
other brand name {
each car will be custom-manufactured to the
specifications of
the purchaser / no two will ever be the same } but
the Maybach will be
a technological tour-de-force, as well. Something
Rolls-Royce and Bentley
haven't been able to claim for a quite a while.
We're talking 12 cylinders,
550 horsepower, and every conceivable
electronic doo-dad imaginable.
Almost to to the point of science fiction.
- Trust me on this one.
Panels that darken and lighten at the touch of
a button. This car wants
for nothing. And the electronics are built in.
Not tacked on later
as an after-thought. A problem with some current
ultra-luxury models.
The $300,000 everyday
car for the rich and famous. Hmmmm... What
else could that $300,000
dollars buy?
A few ideas:
1.) a terrific
starting salary of $30,000 per year for 10 highly-qualified
school teachers.
2.) 15 very practical
Volkswagen Beetles at $20,000 dollars each
3.) a warm meal
for 300,000 starving children in under-developed
countries around the
world { $1.00 per meal }
4.) 3,000 eyeglasses
for under-priviledged kids, at $100.00 per pair
5.) 10 classroom
trailers to replace huts with unsanitary dirt floors
and thatch roofs, at
$30,000 dollars each.
The above is just to
keep things in perspective. I am not against the
wealthy enjoying what
they've earned. But, if I ever read about some
idiot NBA ballplayer
or professional prize-fighter buying 10 Maybachs
of various colors to
match the fabric in his designer suits. -- That will
be a bad, bad, day indeed.
