 An Intoxicated Joe Namath Wants
A Kiss From Sideline Reporter Suzy Kolber
 { So Sad. So Very, Very Sad }

What an unfortunate spectacle that was over the last weekend.
During an NFL broadcast yet another ex-jock EMBARRASSED
himself in front of the entire nation. Joe Namath, quarterback of
the upstart 1969 New York Jets champion football team, disrespected,
if not sexually-harassed an NFL sideline reporter by stating.
And these are Joe's exact words. "I want to kiss you."

Joe didn't say it once. He said it a second time during the interview.
"I really want to kiss you."

 How sad.

For those who did not actually see the brief interview, Joe was
obviously feeling very good. Too good. Probably the result of
some kind of liquid intoxicant. -- Beer maybe. But who can say.

It was all just so rediculously sad.

Joe Willie Namath - during his younger years - may have had the
reputation of being a wild playboy. But he was generally a nice
guy. And a progressive guy. In fact, he once did a commercial for
a popular brand of panty hose -- by actually appearing in the panty
hose. That takes real guts for an ex-jock. And we're talking years
ago. When what Joe did might not have been so understood, as
 today.

Mr. Namath never had a reputation for getting in trouble with the
law. Or for being a bad teammate. Or for acting like an a-hole when
a reporter asked him a tough question after a loss. Joe Namath was
just a devil-may-care kid from Alabama with a smile. And with an
arm that could spiral that football ball sixty-yards downfield on a
 rope.

Joe Namath's spirals were as tight and narrow as you'd ever see
 on a football field.

That's why what happened during that interview Saturday night
was just so sad. Seeing Joe that way. Out of control. -- Quite a fall
for a man who once occupied the booth on Monday Night Football
 broadcasts.

In his day, Joe was a hero to many. The people of New York for a start.
He gave them an NFL crown after Frank Gifford, and before a man named
Parcells walked on the scene. Before Joe, the old American Football
League was a joke. But by beating Johhny Unitas and the Baltimore
Colts, a new day for the NFL was ushered in. Joe Namath became an
instant star. A national celebrity. -- The toast of America.

The other night, Joe's victim was none other than Suzy Kolber. Let's
be clear about something. Suzy is a babe. She's a real cutie. She is hot.
But, in a wholesome girl-next-door kind of way.

Heck we're glad she's there for the world to see!

But while Suzy's at work, she deserves more respect than to be reduced
to a mere sex object. Which is what Joe did by regarding her as nothing
more than a pretty woman to kiss. And not as a  "journalist" trying
 to do her job.

There is just no excuse for this kind of boorish behavior. Surely
Joe meant no harm. But he should have known better. First for being
intoxicated in public. And secondly for agreeing to appear on camera.
-- And what were Suzy's superiors thinking, when they failed to pull
the plug on Joe's sloppy proposal. Before it went out over the nation's
 airwaves.

Were the guys in the truck asleep? Couldn't they see the man was
in no condition to do an interview?

Ms. Culver, along with the likes of Pam Oliver, Robin Roberts, Pam
Ward, Cheryl Miller, { basketball } and Leslie Visser are all talented
female broadcasters who know what they are doing. They are not
just window dressing on a television broadcast. Or eye candy for
 the studio.

But, this kind of incident was bound to happen sooner or later.
{ In another recent incident a college football coach insulted a male
sideline reporter by saying words to the effect..."why did you ask
a dumb question like that?" } Sheesh! Sideline reporters and
particularly journalists who lack a sports background, are generally
looked upon with contempt by some of the troglodytes who put on
 a uniform.

This was not the case in Joe Namath's misstep. He was just an old
football warrior who'd had too much to drink.

Women reporters in sports are here to stay. Like it or not.

Although there is nothing wrong with admiring their beauty. Do it
quietly. These women deserve respect when in front of the camera.

Joe, you owe Suzy a major apology.

{ editor's note: A couple of days after Joe embarassed Suzy
   and himself, he phoned her an offered an apology. She accepted. }
