The
Lynching Of Four American Civilians In Fallujah, Iraq

The town of Fallujah,
Iraq may one day be as notorious as some of
the backwater townships
of Alabama or Mississipi were during the
days of Jim Crow segregation
in the old South. The world witnessed
Wednesday - almost as
immediately as it happened - the lynching of
four innocent Americans
by a crowd of crazed Iraqis.
One day rationalizations
for the lynchings will come by way of the
more militant spokespersons
for an independent Iraq free of foreign
"occupiers." But raw
hatred was on full display as the crowd cheered
as the vehicles containing
the murdered Americans were reduced to
ash-covered metal from
the heat of intense orange-flames that crackled
and snapped almost as
angrily as the crowd. -- Later the blackened
corpses of the Americans
were dragged from the vehicles and beaten
with the backs of shoes.
{ a grave insult in Islamic culture }
Next the bodies were
torn limb from limb, unceremoniously dragged
through the streets,
and strung-up from a nearby bridge for display
to an international
audience. This was a lynching pure and simple.
It was not a military
operation or a justifiable act of revenge. This was
a good, old-fashioned,
lynching fueled by rage and contempt for the
very people responsible
for the "liberation" of Iraq.
An Iraq where video cameras
and unlicensed satellite links would
have been prohibited.
The very devices this crowd of proud Iraqis
used to display their
hatred for the American occupiers to a world-wide
audience.
Fallujah is a town where
the population { Sunni muslims } still take
pride in deposed dicatator
Saddam Hussein. So perhaps it does not
matter to these maniacs
that the four Americans who were murdered
on their turf were civilians.
Men whose very purpose for being in Iraq
in the first place was
to help rebuild the country and contribute to
establishing a more
normal lifestyle for all Iraqi citizens. A lifestyle
free of the repression
and tyrannical rule of men such as Hussein.
But, like the irrational
segregationists of days gone by, the residents
of Fallujah are full
of nostalgia. They feel powerless as a new political
and social order is
built around them. Thus, in their eyes their rage
and murderous acts are
justified. -- And like the lynchings in the
American south this
act of desperation will only hasten the day when
the old Iraq is but
a memory. Because - the residents of Fallujah might
be surprised to find
out - many Iraqis and other Muslims elsewhere in
the world are quietly
hopeful about a democratic Iraq and were horrified
and disgusted by the
lynchings that were accomplished under the
banner of Islam.
Sadly, back here in the
United States there is little that can be done
except to wait patiently
and learn about the retaliation of our military
when it happens. But
as we remember those insane lynchings in Fallujah,
Iraq. We must also remember
the unilateralist American President
responsible for sending
our boys to that ungrateful land. -- Iraq had
better become what the
Bush administration preaches that it will. Or
all the precious American
lives that have been lost, will have been
lost in vain.
