Religious Intolerance In Plain Sight }

The word outside of the
United States is that this country
is a big isolationist
hyperpower, cursed with a worldview
that is twisted by a
naive "johhny-come-lately" arrogance,
born of the U.S.'s unchallenged
military and economic might.
To make matters worse
- the U.S. is the champion of the State
of Israel. "The Zionist
Entity" as some derisely call the Jewish
homeland. A nation state
far more despised in many corners
of the world, than even
its poweful benefactor.
Worldview is important.
Because it is the prism through
which all matters of
relevance are viewed. Economic. Religious.
Cultural. And even entertainment
and sports. A nation may
define good and evil
influences as determined upon how the
state regards itself
against other peoples. Or against history
itself.
So was it any surprise
that the "Jew problem" has reared its
ugly head these past
few weeks. And so once again we in the
United States are reminded
at how underlying
{mis}perceptions
can forever represent
a threat to world peace.
Case in point.
Just resigned former
Prime Minister of Malaysia, Mathahir
spoke at the Organization
of the Islamic conference in October
that "Jews
rule the world by proxy."
Note, Mathahir's words
were not that
"Jews are a great influence
upon the world."{
whether in the end that is desireable or
undesireable } Instead,
the Prime Minister's words were the
direct unequivocable
statement that
"...Jews rule the world
by
proxy."
At this same conference
Mathahir also stated, "...they { Jews }
invented
socialism, communism, human rights and democracy
so
that persecuting them would appear to be wrong so that
they
can enjoy equal rights with others...."
What do these words
mean?
Mathahir is no latter
day black-booted Nazi. He is no racist
fiend. He does not wear
a white sheet over his head. He was the
legitimate leader of
a Muslim nation of 24,000,000 people.
But, did Mathahir really
intentionally suggest that Jews do not
somehow deserve to enjoy
equal rights with others? Or that they
should instead be uneducated
and impoverished. A race of minimal
global influence totally
at the mercy of the rest of mankind?
Mathahir's words were
applauded at the conference at which
he spoke. Obviously,
Mathahir's worldview, and that of other
Muslim leaders is that
to be Jewish is to be counterfeit, illigitimate,
corrupt, and somehow
a threat to the well-being of the rest of
humanity.
And despite the fact
that Mathahir's inflamatory words were
scarcely noticed in
the Western press, his low regard for people
of the Jewish faith
reflects a worldview that is shared by many
like-minded Muslims
all over the globe.
But who in the end can
judge, and declare that one person's
worldview is wrong?
Especially when the speaker is well-spoken,
erudite, and a man who
has earned the respect and admiration
of an entire global
religion.
Let's not shine the spotlight
of religious intolerance only upon
Malaysia's ex-Prime
Minister. Back home in the good ole' USA,
a strong supporter of
the Bush administration, Lt. General William
G. "Jerry" Boykin has
had to defend remarks that were extremely
insensitive to Muslims.
Lt. General Boykin's
has been quoted as stating that the
United States is battling
a "spiritual enemy" named Satan.
Further, the General
believes that George Bush is in the
White House because
"God
put him there..."
If that is not already
bad enough, referring to a 1993 military
battle in the African
nation of Somalia, General Boykins made
these remarks. "...I
knew that my God was bigger than his.
I
knew that my God was a real God, and that his was an idol..."
All of these words were
spoken by a man of high rank in the
US military despite
the fact that the United States has been
defended in battle by
men of all faiths, as well as atheists.
These facts are apparently
inconseqential to Lt. General Boykins.
Hatred of Jews. Contempt
for those who are not of the Christian
faith. Insensitive if
not dangerous words spoken by men who matter.
One can only wonder
the conversation amongst the uneducated
in some dark corner
of Cairo, Egypt? Or amonst the underemployed
and downtrodden in Selma,
Alabama. For, who can the desperate
point to when the fat
and well-fed speak freely of their disregard
for other human beings?
All
on the basis of religion.
When our heads are not
bowed humbly in prayer. Do we look
to our Gods to find
those to hate? Shall we blame all the ills of the
world upon some group
of people who believes differently?
So much of the world's
violence is based upon the history
of the Middle East.
Events
that allegedly happened centuries
ago. Is this
region an unstable vortex that will one day consume
the entire planet? Judaism,
Christianity, and Islam were all born in
the Middle East. And
the hatreds that have arisen out of these
three competing religions
are very real.
And as 9/11 has shown
us all. Hatred can kill.
If a man truly believes
his religion is the only just religion.
And that all other belief
systems are fraudulent. Then how in
the end can he ever
truly respect and trust someone of a different
faith? How can his fellows?
The last two thousands years of
human history are but
an exemplar of the hard truths these
simple questions reveal
to us.
