 Pete Rose Deserves Placement
In The Baseball Hall Of Shame
 author: Vance Cureton

Pete Rose is indeed the public relations disaster that the "doubters"
have claimed he was, in the 14 years that this ex-All Star baseball
player and major league manager has been lying about having gambled
on baseball games. -- Including baseball games involving the Cincinnati
Reds. The very team he once managed.

In fact, in a book soon to be published, Pete Rose has now officially
admitted gambling on baseball games at the same time that he was
manager of the Cincinnati Reds. -- But let it be clear, Pete never placed
a bet on the Reds to lose.

As if that is some badge of honor.

Pete Rose is like the sociopath who has no conscious. He just doesn't
get what all the fuss has been about since the gambling allegations
surfaced 14 years ago. He views his subsequent banning from baseball
and ineligibilty for election into the Baseball Hall of Fame as a great
injustice. Apparently dear old Pete doesn't understand the embarassment
he has caused the sport. Pete seems only conserned about his place
 - however dubious and soiled - in  the history of professional baseball.

 And nothing else.

To say the man is selfish is to state the obvious. Incredibly, he just
doesn't understand how baseball managers can't bet on their sport. Or
their team. And then just mosey on into the Hall of Fame, like their sin
 meant nothing.

 Amazing.

Is "Charley Hustle" { one of Pete Rose's baseball nick's } really this dense.
Or is he playing some kind of calculated "gamble" that enough positive
public sentiment exists out there that he can be forgiven. Now that he has
confessed. -- No matter how haltingly.

Here is an example, of how Pete Rose views his actions. In his own words.
"...I never took an unfair advantage. I never bet more or less based
on injuries or inside information. I never allowed my wagers to influence
my baseball decisions...so in my mind, I wasn't corrupt."

Yes you were Pete. Quite corrupt.

The other previous scandal involving gambling in baseball occurred
way back in 1919. A World Series was "fixed." After the crime was
discovered, the public - at the time - became outraged. And deservedly
so. Even after the principals were indicted and subsequently cleared in
a public trial. The scandal badly tarnished major league baseball's good
 name.

What was important in that long-ago scandal, was not the verdict of
the trial. { to this day the exacts facts of the "fix" remain unclear and
subject to speculation } The integrity of the sport was called into
question. And integrity, like respect, is a quality that once it is lost.
It is terribly difficult to regain.

Baseball has never forgotten what happened in 1919. And baseball
has a rule. The so-called "Rule 21" that states emphatically, you do
not bet on games. The result can be a one year suspension. Or a lifetime
ban if you are caught betting on your own team.

So where is the great injustice that is being done to Pete Rose?
No one put a gun to his head and forced him to bet on ballgames. - And
on is own team, for goodness sakes.

Pete violated baseball's most precious rule. A rule that is drumbeat
into the heads of aspiring little leaguers, and right on up through the
amateur ranks into the big leagues.

You don't place bets on baseball games.

If the current baseball commissioner removes the ban against Pete
Rose, and allows his name to be placed into nomination. And Rose
is eventually elected into the Baseball Hall of Fame. So be it. Rose
will have plenty of equally unsavory company. What with all the
adulterers, drug addicts, alcoholics, wife beaters, and racist bigots,
{ Ty Cobb take a bow } that are already enshrined in Cooperstown.

The Hall of Fame, with Pete Rose under the roof, won't go crumbling
into ruin. But Pete, here's one you don't need to sweat. By gambling
on baseball, and tarnishing the image of an already fading sport.
You've earned your place in the Hall of Shame.

In fact, there's a special seat waiting for you.

Right at the head of the class.
