{
What Does The Death Of Convicted Pedophile
John Geoghan Reveal About The Culture Of
The American Correctional System }

This particular prison
inmate was the lowest of the low. He was a
predator. A predator
of children. A predator of young boys, which
in some respects, is
even more repulsive than if this inmate at least
had an interest in the
opposite sex.
Even a perverted interest in
the opposite sex.
The prisoner's name was
John Geoghan. A defrocked priest and
a convicted child molester.
He was a living, breathing, nightmare
for the Catholic Church,
and all those devoted Catholic parishoners
across America who have
quiet misgivings about adult men unable
to marry. And because
of tradition, destined for lives of celibacy.
In prison, Geoghan, this
predator of defenseless and naive children,
became the prey. In
a role reversal of sorts, he was stalked. Old and
weak, Geoghan was disrespected
and reviled -- even by the prison
guards whose duty
it was to provide security for him.
Geoghan's life became
one of constant insecurity and fear. Death
would surely come knocking.
The only question was when? And
how?
Predictably, Death's
agent did indeed find Geoghan. His cell was the
location where he succumbed.
He was bound, gagged, and strangled
until there was no more
life within him. His attacker was himself
a man with a twisted
world view. Geoghan's killer not only hated
homosexuals, but likewise
despises Blacks and Jews. Geoghan's
killer is a supremacist
of sorts. Uncomfortable with anyone that is
different from his own
pale-skinned self. -- Such men full of illogical
rage and hatred. If
not madness, are hardly rare in prison.
Both murderer and victim
have no place in our American society.
Each was in certain
aspects lawless narcisstic men, intent on doing
what they wanted to
do. Until their actions landed them behind
prison walls.
But, is this the kind
of correctional system that our American tax
dollars pay for? A system
where threats and intimidation routinely
escalate into actual
assaults, prison rape, and prison murder. A
system where guards
hear no evil and see no evil. And are frequently
instigators and participants
in crimiminal activities themselves.
American culture too
readily regards the correctional system as
the quick fix to social
problems. We condemn our unwanted, our
unwashed, our mentally
ill, and our dysfunctional fellow citizens
to a lifetime wasted
behind bars. We prefer judges and juries, to
counselors or educators.
America
incarcerates more individuals
per capita, than
almost any society on Earth. Right now more
than 2 million people
are in incarcerated in the United States.
-- And the prison system
is hardly up to the task.
Most American prisons
lack true discipline, security, and purpose.
Guards are underpaid,
underqualified, and unmotivated. It is
a truth that inmates
{
in one of the most fair judicial processes
available to the
citizens of any nation } are sentenced to their
time. -- To do the years
for the crime that landed them in the
system.
But inmates are not sentenced
to be brutalized, raped, sodomized,
and terrorized, while
they are incarcerated. Inmates are not sentenced
to be mistreated and
beaten without provacation by guards. Only
to lease their anger
and hatred { should they successfully complete
their sentences }
back onto the same society that had them incarcerated
in the first place.
As with the continuing
overuse of the death penalty against the poor,
the uneducated, and/or
minority persons. Or the lack of health care for
all Americans. The correctional
system in every state is a reflection on
our entire society and
how we view ourselves. The belief that prisoners
deserve the harsh
treatment that they receive whilst incarcerated is
an inadequate and
cursory answer.
An answer out of the
Dark
Ages. Not 21st century America.
No one has to care -
or should be blamed for not caring - about the
fate of the defrocked
pedophile John Geoghan. He was a despicable
human being. And as
they say, "the devil always gets his due."
But the madness that
is permitted to go on unabated within American
prisons, reflects badly
upon us all.
