Dear
Evelyn, America Doesn't
Even
Know Who You Are

This has been a very
busy two weeks in the news coverage
of America's latest
"good cry." The human remains previously
found on a beachfront
were officially identified as those belonging
to Laci Peterson, and
to an unborn fetus who is genetically
linked to Scott Peterson.
Laci's cheatin' husband.
Scott was promptly arrested.
And California state Attorney
General Bill Lockyer
foolishly declared in public that prosecutors
had enough evidence
for a "slam dunk."
{ Groan! } Next time
he should speak a while
with Marcia Clark and ask for advice
on how not to get too
far ahead of the game.
Hmmm...
There were dueling press
conferences of a sort. Laci's parents
struggled through tears
to declare in no uncertain terms that
the "monster" who murdered
their baby would pay. Meanwhile,
Scott's parents, like
any decent parents, still believe in their son.
In an "exclusive" interview
on MSNBC, they vigorously defended
him. At one point, Mama
Peterson stated, ..."I'm feeling like I'm
living
in Nazi Germany or the Soviet Union. "
Never underestimate the
strength of a mother's love.
So the soap opera has
begun. America's new "good cry" will
be a tremendous story.
A beautiful all-American girl "from a
good family" was allegedly
murdered by her philanderous no
account husband. Her
body was tossed into the ocean like a
sack of garbarge.
Literally.
It just doesn't get any
better than this. The endless blather
about Laci's murder
should generate a ratings bonanza for the
cable news networks.
And this is truly a case to grieve over
and get out the white
handkerchiefs.
Not like the other big
case that is looming. The trail of Robert
Blake. The former star
of the 70's weekly television series hit,
"Baretta." His "victim"
- and the mother of his new child - was
a former Hustler centerfold
and scam artist who sent naked
pictures of herself
through the mail to lonely-hearts losers
with good bank. -- Not
much sympathy there for the deceased.
Definitely not.
It is interesting to
muse about the differences between Laci
Peterson and Bonnie
Lee Blakely. Blake's murdered wife.
Laci is beloved. Her
murder is almost a national tragedly. Her
face has been seen on
dozens of magazine covers and supermarket
tabloids. Bonnie's murder
is attention-getting only because
of her connection to
an aged Hollywood star. A man who was
known of something of
a head case even in his youth. Of course
he's guilty.
Blakes coming murder trial will be more spectacle
than anything.
If only anyone
at all, would pay attention to poor Evelyn.
Who?
Evelyn Hernandez was
a legal immigrant from El Salvador. We speak
of her in the past tense
because Evelyn is dead now.
Evelyn was also a beautiful
young woman. Just like Laci. She
was only 24 at the time
of her death. Evelyn had beautiful dark
eyes, golden skin, and
a nice smile. Her torso was found in the
San Francisco Bay last
May. Her child is also missing. A young
boy. Presumably
he was murdered along with her.
But somehow everyone
one forgot to tell the media. There was
never any "buzz"
around Evelyn's murder. Maybe her death
was ignored because
she's an immigrant. And the father of her
young child was a married
man. Evelyn apparently wasn't such
a good girl. Her morals
were bad. But, perhaps her "real" mistake
was to get pregnant
by a "local joe." Instead of a Hollywood
has-been.
At least then, maybe
someone would have noticed.
No matter how horribly
Evelyn Hernandez died. She apparently
is a nobody.
She was not the "innocent" young wife that Laci
Peterson was. A good
girl from a good family. Nor was Evelyn
the love interest of
a Hollywood celebrity. Old has-been or not.
Evelyn Hernandez was
just a poor immigrant girl. She is now
reduced to a line on
a police blotter. Or a photograph or two
in a coffee-stained
manilla folder. Reporters don't call the local
station commander to
learn the latest news. Satellite trucks
don't park outside where
she used to live.
Her old neighbors can
sleep at night. There isn't any commotion
on the other sides of
their doors. Only silence.
But, the only thing more
horrible to imagine than how Evelyn
died. Is to wonder how
many other young women there are
like her across America.
Just as ignored.
Just as forgotten.
And just as dead.
