They hate us it seems.
The United States of
America. The self-proclaimed leader of the
Western World. The land
of liberty. Where are all men are created
equal. And there is
liberty and justice for all.
At least according to
the current rhetoric.--
Just ask President Bush.
But all across Europe
there is a startling rise in anti-Americanism.
The recent trend, perhaps
had its genesis in Germany when during
his election campaign
Gerhard Schroeder broke ranks with the
political opposition
and boldly stated his disquiet with American
arrogance and militarism.
The current conflict with Iraq apparently
brought it all so keenly
into focus for Herr Schroeder.
It definitely seems Chancellor
Schroeder struck a chord with the
German populace and
with lookers-on from elsewhere in Europe
and Great Britain. But
where is this all coming from? -- This bitter
dispute of consciousness
with the United States.
Perhaps it all comes
down to human nature.
Forget the actual
political situation
in the world for a moment. The United States
is the sole world superpower.
And this plays into the political
insecurities that exist
- especially in Europe and Asia. Without
the balancing act that
was de regure when the old Soviet Union
was a constant menace
to the welfare of Western Europe. America
itself, is now viewed
as a threat. -- Merely because it so undeniably
powerful a nation. And
unchallenged.
Not only in the military
sphere, but economically
and culturally as well. And despite the
nascent existense of
the "United States of Europe," as the European
Union is sometimes called.
This anti-Americanism
is only heightened by an administration
where the American leader
is viewed as arrogant, unilateralist
in his politics, and
not too bright -- to place a fine point upon it.
The Europeans, the British,
and the Asians, for that matter, have
never taken to George
Bush. They don't like him. And Bush only
obliges his detractors,
and further reinforces his cowboy image
when he makes "unilateralist"
statements such as proclaiming Iraq,
Iran, and North Korea,
as part of an
"Axis of Evil." --- One of the
most startling political
blunders in recent history. A gaffe that will
be dicussed in political
science essays for many an administration
to come.
--And
look where that mindless declaration has gotten Bush!
The conflict with Iraq
will have its denouement. And hopefully
America will not be
trapped in a Vietnam-like quagmire. Or in a
militarily-indelicate
situation where we are seen by the entire
world as imperialist
aggressors. -- With no end to an Iraqi
occupation in sight.
Kim Jong II will back
down. And stop this suicidal game he is
playing. A misguided
ploy that may well backfire horribly against
him. For the sake of
his own survival he must allow the nations
of the world -- led
by the United States to feed his starving
masses of people.
These two crises will
be no more. And the true America will be
left standing for all
to see.
We are not Hitler's Germany
- responsible for the murder of six
million Jews. We are
not Stalinist Russia where countless numbers
of innocents were slaughtered.
We are not Belgium. Where under
King Leopold's authority,
at least 10 million Congolese were worked
to death so that the
monarchy could profit from the theft of the
natural wealth of an
entire African nation.
We are not even Great
Britian. Who dropped her unwanted on
the shores of a far-away
continent. And left them there without
so much as a care, as
to the devastating effect on the native people
who called that continent
home.
In the half-century that
the United States has existed as a dominant
world power we have
committed no such crimes, on as grand a
scale. And with such
planning and forethought.
Our friends across the
waters are well aware of this. We are
not the "enfant-terrible"
of superpowers that their harsh words
proclaim.
But as the sole remaining
military giant. We desperately need
political leadership
that is more astute at wielding the one big
stick that remains in
the world. Mindless unilateralism and cowboy
rhetoric only serves
to create more enemies for our nation, than
a generation's worth
of smart bombs and high-tech weaponry could
ever hope to defeat.
