 CNN Moves Forward Without Connie Chung
 { Who's On Television. Who's Not. }

 One positive consequence of the conflict in Iraq is the removal
 of the abysmal "Connie Chung Tonight" from the CNN prime-time
 line-up. The show which was DOA from the very beginning has 
 been officially cancelled.

 Connie Chung's hiring by CNN last year - it seems far longer 
 - was as a curiousity from the moment her arrival at that network 
 was announced. Connie Chung is a competent enough television 
 journalist. But her skill as a one-on-one interviewer has always 
 been extremely questionable. Visit her ineffectual interview of 
 former Congressman Gary Conduit at the height of media circus 
 concerning the disappearance of Chandra Levy.

 Several more skilled television interviewers - who shall not be 
 here named - would at the very least have left the evasive 
 congressman much embarassed, angry, and/or shame-faced. 
 { regardless if he had actually answered the most controversial
  questions, placed to him } This was beyond Connie's intuitive 
 ability as an interviewer. -- Perhaps the reason she was the 
 choice of the congressman's staff in the first place.

 As Connie Chung's one weakness was so well-known. And 
 very obvious. Why then did CNN hire her to do a talk show
 of all things. Because she was Asian? Because she was an 
 attractive Asian? Because she was a "name" in the television 
 business? -- Regardless if she was well qualified on talent 
 alone to do the job she was apparently hired to do.

 Connie Chung's hiring and abrupt dismissal, only adds to 
 the skeptism within certain communities as to who gets hired 
 into high profile jobs in television and in other employment 
 arenas. True diversity in TV Land does not exist. 

 Most of the female anchors on cable and broadcast news 
 programs and magazine shows are attractive twenty, thirty, 
 and forty-somethings with "hollywood-beautiful" faces. The 
 majority of these women are vaguely "european" in physical 
 appearance. --Regardless of their actual ethnicity.

 Don't believe it? Just turn your on your television set. The 
 evidence is right in front of you.

 It is a fact of life that broadcast media in no way mirrors the 
 population of our college campuses and graduate schools. 
 How unfortunate it is that qualified women of intelligence 
 and skill - but who do not fit a certain profile - must forever 
 languish in the less glamorous jobs on the blind side of the 
 camera.
