 Two-Grizzled Old Dinosaurs
 { The Deaths Of David Brinkley And Gregory Peck }
 author: Vance Cureton

How shocking is the news when it finally arrives. The death notice
of a famous "old" person. Kind of half-expected. Anticipated. But,
 shocking nontheless.

And even more strange is arrival of a second notice. In the same
month, the same week, sometimes even the same day.

This day's shocking death notices were those of retired news
anchor and talk show host David Brinkley, and actor Gregory Peck.
Distinguished old men from another era. Brinkley famous in the
broadcast biz from the mid-1950's! And Peck, one of America's
most well-regarded actors from the post-WWII period.

In many ways these two men were eerily similar. Scandal never
really touched either. And neither seemed to take themselves too
seriously, for the most part. Both seemed to dislike people who
were always "defining" others. In Brinkley's case, Joseph McCarthy
and the backward-thinking southern segratationists. A strong stance
from a man who was himself a Son of The South.

{ The nightly news show, "The Huntley-Brinkley Report" was
labeled so anti-segregationist that the show was for a time,
 refused by some southern NBC affiliates }

And Peck in his principled movies stood as a great voice against
injustice and prejudice. Both 1947's "Gentleman's Agreement," and
1962's "To Kill A Mockingbird," for which Peck won an Oscar,
were timely testiments against racial bigotry and social Darwinism.

Both Gregory Peck and David Brinkley were men of character and
substance. And carried themselves that way. Each curiously, had
a distinct manner of speaking. Brinkley's staccato Southern drawl
was reassuring and folksome. Peck's deep baritone was dignity
 itself.

Yet, there words were always fair.

Each in his own way, was tolerant and non-judgemental.

In this era of obnoxious loud-mouthed broadcasters who believe it
is their job to diminish and redicule people whom they do not like.
And modern hollywood-types who believe that the more outrageous,
immoral, and rediculous they are. The more "authentic" they will be
adjudged in the public's eye. Peck and Brinkley knew when to leave
 the scene.

Both men stayed a very long time. But they didn't stay too long.

 Old grizzled dinosaurs, indeed.
