 Brigitte Boisselier and the Cloned Baby Eve
 { What Comes Next? }

 Yesterday, with little fanfare, and amidst an immediate avalanche 
 of skeptism, contempt, and condemnation, a scientist by the name 
 of Brigitte Boisselier announced that the world's first cloned human 
 baby had been born. Boisselier, who is an adherent of a weird 
 religious/scientific sect known as the Raelians, { who believe that 
 humanity is the result of alien genetic manipulation } offered no 
 direct proof of the reality of the cloned baby, except in identifying 
 the child as "Eve" { not her real name } and promising that DNA 
 evidence - confirmed by an outside independent source - would be 
 available within the next ten days or so. 

 Despite the decided weirdness of Boisselier's personal beliefs - if 
 the reality of the cloned birth is confirmed - this would be a scientific 
 achievement matched by little else in human history. And it would 
 be made all the more remarkable given that the group responsible 
 for the cloned birth would have operated outside of - and without 
 the blessing - of the established scientific fraternity. 

 Already, most of the condemnation of Clonaid { the company 
 overseeing the cloned births } coming from the medical community 
 in the U.S. seems to be touched by professional jealously, and 
 umbrage at the idea that these strange, arrogant, Raelians - who 
 actually believe in little green men - could have possibly been 
 responsible  for a scientific breakthrough of this magnitude. It 
 would be as if some poorly trained, backyard shade-tree mechanic 
 in shabby worn-out overalls, had devised a new efficient power 
 source that would render OPEC totally irrelevant in the not so 
 distant future.  -- Such is the unrealness of Brigitte Boisselier's 
 claim. 

 In the next two weeks the world will possibly learn if this is indeed 
 some incomprehensible hoax perpetrated by people who live, breathe, 
 and think outside the box. And this is probably only the beginning 
 as there are others out there of Boisselier's ilk, promising that cloned 
 babies of their own are imminent. So in reality, the particulars of the 
 scientific procedures used by Clonaid - the X's and O's if you will, 
 are for the moment, irrelevant. 

 Hoax or no hoax. 

 Because the science will eventually get figured out. And probably 
 a lot sooner than anyone not claiming to be a Raelian would imagine. 

 The real challenge for mankind is not in how quickly reactionary 
 politicians and mainstream religious leaders - on U.S. turf or overseas 
 - can lobby for laws that ban all human cloning. The challenge is in 
 how effectively forward-thinking people can silence those who are 
 quick to condemn all scientific progress. Narrow-minded alarmists
 who perceive only a threat to their religious beliefs in each cultural 
 and technological step, humanity - by divine design or not - must
 take in order to keep evolving. And to remain true to our inquisitive 
 nature. 

 Unlikely as the idea may seem right now. We may one day have 
 Brigitte Boisselier to thank for opening this particular door when 
 we - as a race of beings - were not quite ready. For despite the 
 negative soothsayers all out and about preaching doom. We had 
 better be ready for what ever comes next. 

 Chose to believe it or not. -- The future is near.  Not far. Little 
 green aliens and all.
