The
Assassination Of Sheik Ahmed Yassin
{
Just Deserts For An Unfeeling Murderer? }

Three well-aimed missles
was all it took. And now the entire peace process
{ if it can still
be called that } in the Middle East has been changed. Perhaps
irrevocably.
Sheik Ahmed Yassin is
dead. Assassinated by the state of Israel. He was killed
instantly in a deadly
airstike as he left a mosque after morning prayers. But
besides the obvious
political questions as to what the wheelchair-bound
Yassin's assassination
will mean to the prospects for future peace in the region.
A larger question looms
as to whether or not this Israeli action is legitimate.
Or merely uncomfortable
for the Jewish state's allies.
Already, British Foreign
Secretary Jack Straw has denounced the assassination
as a an action that
will yield little benefit. "It is unacceptable,
it is unjustified,
and
it is very unlikely to acheive its objectives."
Similar doubts have been
expressed by the White House.
Predictably, Sheik Yassin
has now been characterized by his fellow Palestinians
as a martyr. Yassir
Arafat stated about the slain Sheik. "May you
join the martyrs
and
the prophets. To heaven you martyr."
Strong words of praise
for a man who was the co-founder of Hamas. A militant
Palestinian terrorist
organization responsible for the murder of hundreds of
innocent Israeli citizens
in countless suicide bombings. There is a common
saying - the exact words
vary according to the situation. "One man's
terrorist,
is
another man's hero." { martyr }
There
is nothing heroic in murdering innocent people who are just going
about
their daily lives.
Sheik Yassin was unapologetic
in his hatred of the state of Israel. And was
enraged by Israel's
illegal presense on Palestinian land. Thoughts shared by
Arafat and most of the
Palestinian populace. But Arafat - yielding to international
pressure - has in recent
years denounced suicide bombings. While Yassin is
believed to have been
directly involved in the planning of such attacks. { or
at least to have
given his blessing } Bombs that have killed Jewish babies.
Maimed Jewish elders
at bus stops. Murdered college students. And destroyed
young families.
The suicide bomb is the
weapon of choice of Hamas { officially known as The
Islamic Resistance
Movement } and other militant Palestinian organizations.
Hamas doesn't use guerilla
fighters against military targets. Or men riding in
fast cars firing point
blank at checkpoints manned by equally well-armed Israeli
soldiers. Palestinians
- with the encouragement of unprincipled men such as
Sheik Yassin - use the
coward's method of warfare. A bomb wrapped tightly
around the waist of
a person dressed in civilian garb. Ironically, when such
bombs explode. Civilians
die. As the terrorists frequently attack "soft"
targets
that are far away from
military installations.
This is the path that
Hamas has chosen. An illegitimate means of warfare.
No different than Usama
Bin Laden and his murderous cadre of jihadists.
Or that of Chechen rebels
responsible for equally reprehensible bombings
of civilian targets
in Moscow and other regions of the old Soviet Union.
So now, an untimely death
has befallen a partially-blind, crippled old man in
a wheelchair. Was his
assassination a moral outrage? As so many diplomats
around the globe, have
thus described the act.
History will make
the final judgement on that account. But the unfeeling
hatred of Jews that
Sheik Yassin carried in his heart for his entire life. A hatred
that permitted him to
send suicide bombers against unarmed men, women, and
children. Is the
same unfeeling hatred that was so ruthlessly returned in kind
against him.
The Sheik showed no mercy
towards Israeli innocents. Many of whom languish
in hospitals, horribly
disfigured, and are now dependent upon the charity of
others for the rest
of their lifetimes. Sheik Yassin was fortunate that his death
occurred in only a matter
of seconds. He did not suffer. He did not have time
to contemplate his own
demise.
Such
a painless ending was more than he deserved.
But whether Sheik Yassin
now resides in heaven with his fellow martyrs. Or
in an unbearable hell
with other evildoers. Those of us who still walk upon the
Earth as mortal men
will never have to gaze upon his hateful face, again.
